🚉 Day 2: Wednesday, April 23 - Travel Day & Ghent

Ghent: Historical Background

Ghent (Gent in Dutch) is one of Belgium's oldest cities with a history dating back to the 7th century when St. Amand founded two abbeys here. By the Middle Ages, it had become one of the largest and richest cities in northern Europe, primarily due to its textile industry and strategic location at the confluence of the Scheldt and Leie rivers.

Unlike Bruges, which has become something of a living museum, Ghent retains an authentic working-city atmosphere while preserving its stunning medieval architecture. The city has a rebellious history - in 1540, Emperor Charles V, who was born in Ghent, punished the city for rebelling against his taxes by forcing the city nobles to walk the streets with nooses around their necks (giving rise to the nickname "Stroppendragers" or noose-bearers, which locals wear with pride).

Today, Ghent's historic center is a wonderful blend of medieval and renaissance architecture, with a thriving university population keeping the atmosphere young and vibrant. The city has managed to maintain its authentic character while avoiding the overwhelming tourist crowds of other Belgian cities.
